What is ModernWestern Square Dancing?

Western Square Dancing is a sophisticated form of Folk Dance containing contributions from dance forms world wide. It has been influenced by dance forms from the UK, Germany, France, Spain and many other countries. In the mid 1920's, Henry Ford of 'you can have any colour as long as it's black' fame was instrumental is setting up the basics of Western Square Dancing. In those days it had a very simple format that has since been developed and refined.

Modern Western Square Dancing is made up of a number of Plateaux of Dance Moves

We have a Basic Plateau to lay the foundations for future dancing. This plateau has about 50 moves to learn.

We have the Mainstream Plateau that is the first level that is danced 'publicly' with other mainstream dancers from other clubs. The plateau has about 20 moves to learn.

At the Mainstream level of dancing we gain experience of responding to the very varied calls of different Callers and we get the experience to 'hone our skills'.

I here you say 'What/who is a Caller?' Well he/she is the person who directs the dancing by calling out the moves he/she wants you to dance to the music (dancing is movement to music).

The music that the Caller uses is made up of two types.

The first is known as Patter music. This music keeps the 'beat 'of the dance against a back ground of  a simple melody. The series of calls a Caller uses is known as Patter Calling.

The second type of music is a singing call. It is made up of 7 modules of dancing to a well know song that may be new or old or pop or classic.

The whole concept is very entertaining and can be very fast and energetic.
